Hyundai Veloster Turbo Ultimate
From coupes to convertibles, sports cars can be found in several automotive segments, but among three-door sport coupes, there’s only one option, the Hyundai Veloster. Redesigned for 2019, the more refined model bears a cleaner exterior design and improved engine choices. For 2020, the Veloster gains even more standard equipment. Latino Traffic Report recently zoomed about town in the Veloster Turbo Ultimate.
The Veloster’s third door.
There are six available trims and each comes in unique colors, materials, and accents. The redesign smartly included a two-tone exterior paint option reserved for the Turbo Ultimate trim. The test model came in a Chalk White body with a black roof.
While a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb.–ft. of torque matched to a six-speed manual powers the base model, the test model came with the turbo-charged 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine that produces 201 horses and 195 lb.–ft. of torque. It’s paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters. A six-speed manual transmission had been available on the Turbo Ultimate, but not for 2020. That’s a shame because at the Veloster launch, where LTR drove both transmissions, the manual really ramped up the coupe’s sporty performance. The manual is also standard on the R-Spec trim.
The automatic, however, will earn the best EPA estimated fuel economy of 28 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. During the test drive, it averaged 33.8 mpg.
To customize the driving experience, Drive Mode Select comes standard on all Velosters and offers three driver-selectable modes—Normal, Sport, and Smart. Left in Sport for most of the weeklong test, the ride was noticeably stiff and heavy. Active Engine Sound, standard on the R-Spec trim and above, allows the driver to adjust the engine rumble for a sportier effect.
The Veloster’s appeal may be connected to its sportiness but it is a hatch and as such, it offers something other sport coupes don’t, utility, namely 19.9 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row seat and 44.5 cu. ft. with it folded flat.
Standard safety features on the Veloster include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with autonomous braking, Lane Keep Assist, and a rear view camera with dynamic guidelines. One away from the top-of-the line trim, the Ultimate added Forward Collision-Avoidance with pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control.
Features like Blind-Spot Collision and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning, as well as Blue Link, Hyundai’s onboard emergency, diagnostic, guidance service, are standard on all but the base trim.
Standard creature comforts include basics like air conditioning, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, a seven-inch display screen with AM/FM radio, dual USB ports, steering-wheel-mounted audio, Bluetooth, and cruse control, plus Apple CarPlay/Android Audio. Stepping up to the Turbo Ultimate brings fancier features like an eight-inch display with the Infiniti Premium audio system and navigation, a proximity key, leather seating with heated front seats with an orange accent stripe, a sunroof, and a heads-up display.
Pricing for the 2020 Veloster starts at $19,755. The as-tested price came to $29,440.
Si: The three-door Veloster stands alone among sports coupes with its design and value.
No: The automatic transmission didn’t elevate the driving experience.
NoticiasComments Off on The Most Dangerous States for Car Crashes
Mar182020
Latino Traffic Report has learned that there were 33,654 fatal motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2018 in which 36,560 deaths occurred, according to the latest report by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The number and types of motor vehicle crash deaths differ widely among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. A state’s population has an obvious effect on the number of motor vehicle deaths, as well as types of vehicles driven, travel speeds, state traffic laws, emergency care capabilities, weather, and topography.
There were 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.13 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The fatality rate per 100,000 people ranged from 4.4 in the District of Columbia to 22.2 in Mississippi. The death rate per 100 million miles traveled ranged from 0.54 in Massachusetts to 1.83 in South Carolina.
In 2018, Wyoming had the highest percentage of deaths involving SUV and pickup occupants (49 percent) and a relatively low percentage of deaths involving car occupants (23 percent). In contrast, Vermont had the highest percentage of deaths involving car occupants (49 percent) and a relatively low percentage of deaths involving SUV and pickup occupants (26 percent).
Other factors contributing to crashes include blood alcohol levels (BAC) and the use of seatbelts. While not all states report BAC for all passenger vehicle drivers, 31 states and the District of Columbia had BAC reporting rates of at least 70 percent. Among these states, Montana had the highest estimated percentage of fatally injured drivers with BACs of 0.08 percent or higher (45 percent) and West Virginia had the lowest (12 percent).
In 2018, fatally injured occupants were approximately half as likely to use restraints compared with the nationwide average. The state with the highest observed seat belt use for front seat occupants was Hawaii, at 98 percent, while the lowest was New Hampshire at 76 percent. California had the highest restraint use percentage among fatally injured occupants at 61 percent while New Hampshire had the lowest at just 28 percent.
Finally, Texas ranked the highest among states with the most fatal traffic accidents (3,305) in 2018 while Mississippi had the highest death rate per 100,000 population. For a listing of rates for every state go to www.iihs.org.
FeaturesComments Off on The Third Annual LTR Truck Guide
Mar042020
Chevy Silverado
For the last two years, Latino Traffic Report (LTR) has produced a truck guide, recognizing the appeal pickups hold, not just in the state of Texas, the number-one truck market, but also among Latinos. For 2020, we present our third installment. This guide includes models test-driven for at least a week by LTR and offers an overview, not a ranking, of what they offer or lack. For additional truck info or to compare and contrast, check out last year’s guide as well as the original.
Nissan Frontier
Coasting on a redesign that’s fifteen years old, the Nissan Frontier continues to offer utility and off-road capability, plus the lowest starting price in its segment.
Rumors of a redesign for the Frontier had been circulating
for years but nothing definitive was announced, until this year at the Chicago
Auto Show. According to Tiago Castro, director, Commercial
Vehicle Business Unit, Nissan North America, Inc., there will be an all-new
Frontier in 2021 and while 2020 will be the final year of this
generation, it will include the 2021’s powertrain, an all-new 3.8-liter V6
engine matched to a nine-speed transmission.
Last year the Frontier was the most-affordable pickup in its class, with a starting price of $18,990, excluding destination fees, but the test model, Frontier SV Crew Cab SWB 4×4, sat well above the base.
The list of optional features included on the test model began
with the powertrain, namely the 4.0-liter V6 with 261 horsepower and 281 lb.–ft.
of torque. It will be replaced later this year by the previously mentioned V6.
It was matched to a five-speed automatic transmission and included a two-speed
transfer case with 4Hi and 4Lo options for off-road capability.
Functionality sells trucks and the test model offered a
maximum towing capacity of 6,380 lbs. as well as 60/40 split rear seats that
flipped up, as well as down, to reveal added storage.
On the drive, however, the Frontier was capable but clearly
outdated, especially on the inside. The Value Truck Package ($1,890) added
upgrades like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear sonar for parking, a factory-applied
spray on bed liner, and sliding bed extender, among several features, bringing
the as-tested price to $33,560. But it lacked basic new technology like a blind
spot monitor or navigation.
The 2020 Frontier will go on sale this spring.
Ford Ranger
Like the Frontier, the Ranger remained unchanged for many years before it disappeared in 2011. But in 2019, Ford also decided to re-enter the midsize truck segment by bringing back its venerated “little” truck. The new version, however, joins its enlarged competition, measuring 210.8 inches in length.
Toyota Tacoma
On the outside, it appeared to borrow design cues from the Toyota Tacoma. Can you tell which is which? While it borrowed some design cues from the Tacoma, it didn’t adopt one of its best, a dampened tailgate.
When LTR last tested the Ranger, before the redesign, it too suffered from being dated as well as guzzling gas. The new model, however, included the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 lb.–ft. of torque matched to a ten-speed automatic transmission, giving it an improved EPA estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway. The as-tested fuel economy came to an average of 22 mpg.
The Ranger has a maximum towing of 7,500 on all trims but payload varies and the test model had the lowest figure of 1,560 lbs.
Priced above the Frontier, the test
model also included popular technology that its competitor did not, like a
blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, a digital
TFT in the instrument cluster with an average fuel economy calculator among
other features, and an eight-inch touch screen in the center stack to display
navigation or audio information, or both with a split screen option.
Like the Frontier the test model included heated front seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel, satellite radio, a spray-in bed liner, and dual-zone climate control but the Ranger added leather seating.
Pricing for the 2020 Ranger starts at $25,605. The as-tested price, including the FX4 Off-Road Package ($1,295) came to $44,960.
Chevrolet Silverado
For 2019 Chevrolet completely redesigned, the Silverado and entered the market with a range of eight models and six engine/transmission choices. The test model was the two-wheel drive double cab RST trim, powered by the turbocharged 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder (I4).
The real competition for trucks
happens under the hood and Chevy’s range of engines, from the four-cylinder to
a diesel, gives it a definite advantage.
Matched to an eight-speed automatic
transmission, the I4 should produce 310 horsepower and 348 lb.–ft. of torque.
Maximum tow rating for the Silverado is 13,400 lbs. with the V8 but maximum
towing for the test model came to 7,000 lbs.
Body-color trim, full LED lighting
(foglamps, headlamps and taillamps) and up to 22-inch wheels distinguish the
RST trim from the others. The test model, however, included 18-inch bright
silver painted aluminum wheels.
With redesigns, the focus begins with
the exterior and in the case of the new Silverado, at first glance, its
features can be polarizing compared to the clean lines of its predecessor, but
it does improve on closer inspection. The new pickup is also 1.6 inches longer
and has a bed that’s seven inches wider giving it a best-in-class cargo volume
starting with the short box’s 63 cubic feet. Maximum payload on the test model
came to 2,190 lbs.
The test model also included Active
Fuel management to give it an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 20/23
mpg respectively. During the test drive, it achieved an average range of 23.2
in the city and up to 32.4 mpg on the highway.
The test model did include signature GM
technology like Stabilitrak, OnStar, Teen Driver, a rear seat reminder to
encourage drivers to check the back seat before locking the vehicle, and a dampened
tailgate that releases with the push of a button.
Pricing for the 2020 Silverado starts
at $29,795. The as-tested pricing included multiple packages from Convenience
with Bucket Seats ($1,655) to Safety ($890), which brought the price up to $47,795.
Ford F-250
The Ford’s F-Series has held the top-selling vehicle title for 42 years. The F-150 has made-up the bulk of these sales but it’s bulkier super duty siblings, the F-250, F-350, and F-450 provide the utility that work truck buyers demand. LTR recently drove the F-250 SRW 4×4 Crew Cab Limited.
Best in class achievements help super duties stand out in this highly competitive segment. For 2020, the F-250 will offer a choice of three engines including an all-new 7.3-liter V8 with best-in-class 430 horsepower and best-in-class 475 lbs.–ft. of torque. The third-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 powered the test model. For 2020 it has been upgraded to deliver best-in-class 475 horsepower and best-in-class 1,050 ft.–lbs. of torque. A 6.2-liter V8 is the F-250’s standard gas engine. While the 6.7-liter diesel on the test model was matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, an all-new ten-speed heavy-duty TorqShift automatic transmission is standard with the 7.3-liter V8 and 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 for 2020.
Technology on a work truck is essential and as a Limited trim level, the test model added FordPass Connect, embedded 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi access for up to ten devices and charge up with wireless charging and USB-C ports as well as the Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera. The test model also included a tailgate step, ambient lighting, voice activated navigation, and adaptive cruise control. Capacity specs for the F-250 test model maxed out at 19,100 1bs. towing and 3,470 lbs. payload.
While fuel efficiency ratings are not required for super duties, the text model achieved an average fuel economy of 15.5–16.6 mpg during the drive.
Pricing for the 2020 F250 starts at $35,300. The as-tested price came to $84,500, including extra charges for a gooseneck hitch kit, 3.55 electronic locking axle, a fifth-wheel hitch prep package and a bed spray-in bed liner.
NoticiasComments Off on Hispanic Heritage Day Opens at Chicago Auto Show, LTR Turns Five
Feb132020
February may be Black History Month but this Friday, Valentine’s Day, will be Hispanic Heritage Day at the Chicago Auto Show, which has set one day aside since 2007, in partnership with Telemundo, to celebrate Latino culture and community in Chicago. Each year the day features special appearances by local artists. This year will include performances by Ballet Folklorico Xochitl, Mariachi los Viajeros, and Isabella Mota, Sebastian Castellanos, and Alexandra Salgado.
Celebrating its fifth anniversary since launching at the Chicago Auto Show in 2015, Latino Traffic Report (LTR) recently attended the media preview for the show. Here are LTR’s recommended must-sees for Latinos.
Nissan Frontier—Nissan has finally set a date to redesign its mid-size pickup, the Frontier. According to Tiago Castro, director, Commercial Vehicle Business Unit, Nissan North America, Inc., the all-new version will be a 2021 model. Until it appears, however, the 2020 version, the final model year for the current generation, will include the 2021’s powertrain, a 3.8-liter direct injection V6 engine and all-new nine-speed automatic transmission.
“From its roots tracing back more than
60 years, to the current model, Frontier has had a lasting impact on the
compact and mid-size truck segments in North America,” said Castro.
“As Nissan transitions to the next chapter, we celebrate both a proud past
and a bright future with the heart of the next Frontier.”
The 2020 Frontier will go on sale this spring.
Jeep Mojave and High Altitude—Jeep introduced two new trim levels, the Mojave and High Altitude, the former available on the Gladiator and the latter on both the Gladiator and Wrangler. Bearing the Jeep Desert Rated badge, the 2020 Gladiator Mojave, available later this year, hopes to appeal to off-road enthusiasts who prefer racing in the sand over rock climbing while the High Altitude versions of the Gladiator and Wrangler will appeal to off-roading fans who like to rock climb in the lap of luxury. Standard creature comforts on the High Altitude will include the Alpine premium audio system, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, automatic high-beam headlamp control, GPS navigation, remote proximity keyless entry, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, and ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines.
Jaguar F-Type—Jaguar brought its all-new 2021 F-Type, featuring a more muscular exterior and a range of engines including four-, six- and eight-cylinder options with 296 hp, 380 hp and 575 hp respective outputs, matched to an eight-speed Quickshift transmissions with full manual control capability using either the SportShift gear selector or the steering wheel-mounted paddles.
The 2021 Jaguar F-TYPE is priced from
$61,600 in the U.S., and will be available as a Coupe or Convertible model in
four trim levels.
Genesis GV80—Genesis joined the premium SUV movement by introducing its entrant in the segment, the all-new GV80. The first SUV from Genesis, it shares similar design elements with its siblings, namely the oversized crest grille and quad headlamps. Two turbocharged gasoline engines (2.5-liter and 3.5-liter) will be available for the North American market, each paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Models equipped with the optional all-wheel-drive will also have electronically controlled Limited Slip Differential at the rear axle. It should arrive at dealerships later this year.
The nation’s largest auto show, the Chicago Auto Show spans
more than one million square feet of contiguous floor space where nearly 1,000
different vehicles are on display, including hundreds of interactive,
aftermarket, accessories and auto-related exhibits, competition vehicles,
antique and collector cars. Additionally, the show features four indoor test
tracks and three outdoor ride-and-drive opportunities.
RecallsComments Off on Mitsubishi Recalls Certain Montero Models
Jan262020
Latino Traffic Report has learned that Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 1998-2000 Montero vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall is expected to begin March 22, 2020. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA’s number for this recall is SR-20-001.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Jan182020
Latino Traffic Report has learned that Carlos Sainz and his co-driver Lucas Cruz have won the Rally Dakar for the third time, presenting MINI with its fifth overall victory at the iconic endurance rally. The Spanish pair, in the MINI John Cooper Works Buggy, finished 6:21 minutes ahead of last year’s winner Nasser Al-Attiyah after roughly 7,500 kilometres through Saudi Arabia, which was hosting the Dakar for the first time.
Dakar Rally, Saudi Arabia, MINI JCW Buggy, Carlos Sainz.
“I am very, very happy,” said Cruz. “So much hard work, physical training and test work with the team has gone into getting this result. The race was fantastic for us drivers, but you had to work very hard, right from day one. It is hard to imagine, but it was a full-throttle rally from the word go. Right now, I just want to enjoy the success.”
Dakar record winner Stéphane Peterhansel and his co-driver Paulo Fiuza finished third, 9:58 minutes behind Sainz and Cruz, to round off an impressive performance from the two MINI JCW Buggies.
Seven of the nine MINI crews that started the rally reached the finish in Al-Quiddia, four of them in the top ten, including the team from Argentina, Orlando Terranova and Bernardo ‘Ronnie’ Graue, who finished in the top three on three days on their way to sixth place overall in the four-wheel drive MINI JCW Rally.
Sainz and Cruz claimed their first stage win on the third leg. That victory took them to the top of the overall standings—a position they held right through to the finish.

Latino Traffic Report (LTR) claims an affiliation on two automotive journalist organizations, the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA), as a member, and the Hispanic Motor Press Awards (HMPA), as a juror. Both organizations announced 2020 award winners last fall and LTR predicts that some of these models will continue to receive accolades throughout the year.
Ram 1500. Photo by Kevin McCauley.
In October, TAWA held its twenty-sixth annual Truck Rodeo, an event that offers its members the chance to test drive trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV) on- and off-road for two days, culminating in a vote for the winners in individual categories as well as the overall Truck and SUV of Texas—there was a Crossover Utility Vehicle category in the past but it was dropped this year.
Nineteen categories were represented but not all included competitors, i.e. Full-Size Pickup Truck of Texas, plus the overall prizes of Truck and SUV of Texas awards, won by the 2020 Ram 1500 and the all-new 2020 Kia Telluride, respectively. For a list of all the winners go to www.texasautowriters.org. #TXautowriters.
Nissan Leaf.
The HMPA, through the Hispanic Motor Press Foundation (HMPF), celebrated its tenth annual awards presentation, announcing the winners at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. These awards are the only ones that recognize automotive value and appeal in the Latino market.
“With Hispanic buyers accounting for 25 percent of the growth in new-vehicle sales, HMPA helps by preselecting choices for the consumer,” states Ricardo Rodriguez-Long, founder and president of the HMPF. The non-profit organization spearheads the awards and helps educate Latinos on cleaner mobility through year-round grassroots efforts and events.
Ford Escape Hybrid.
A jury of 27 Latino auto journalists assessed vehicles from twelve categories based on test drives and specific criteria, e.g. fuel economy, in order to come up with the winners. Green car winners included the Nissan Leaf in the Electric Car category and the Ford Escape Hybrid in the Hybrid category. The awards also reflected a winning trend for the Ram 1500 and Kia Telluride, taking top honors in the Pickup Truck and Sports Utility categories, respectively, that will probably continue through the next year—the Ram Heavy Duty and Telluride were recently announced as finalists for the North American Truck and Utility Vehicles of the Year.
Audi, ReviewsComments Off on Sedan Review: 2019 Audi A7
Dec312019
Fans of the sedan need not despair. While domestic carmakers may have thrown in the towel, import brands, like Audi, remain loyal to them, even reconfiguring sedans to increase their appeal. Latino Traffic Report recently test drove the all-new 2019 Audi A7 quattro. It may be pricey but for those who can afford it, the A7 delivers the luxury and elegance expected of a premium sedan, with a twist.
The A7 is not the average midsize sedan. It reflects a more
modern design concept, the sportback or five-door coupe, which is basically a
sedan with a hatch rather than a traditional trunk. This gives the A7 a sleeker
profile, with a sloping roofline, as well as enhanced versatility with 24.9
cubic feet of cargo room and a button for shutting the lid automatically, kinda
like a tailgate.
Audi added a turbocharger to its 3.0-liter V6 engine that
powers the 2019 A7, increasing performance to 335 horsepower and 369 lb.–ft. of
torque. Matched to a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission,
the A7 can accelerate from zero–60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds.
This much power, plus the standard quattro all-wheel-drive, will detract from fuel economy but the stop-start technology (less jarring than on other vehicles) at traffic stops helps the A7 achieve an EPA estimated fuel economy of 22 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. It achieved 22.7 on the test drive.
Standard features on the A7 include Audi advanced key,
Sirius/XM Satellite Radio with a 90-day free trial, Apple CarPlay and Google Android
Auto, regular cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and Audi’s MMI
navigation plus system.
Inside, the test model got an upgrade from the Prestige Package that added more than $8,000 in exclusive features, including the Bang and Olufsen premium sound system, a full-color head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats, a rear sunshade, and wireless charging.
Additional safety features like Audi side assist, rear cross
traffic alert, a top view camera, Audi pre-sense rear collision alert, and
adaptive cruise control, were also included with the test model.
Every new A7 also features Audi’s all-new MMI touch response system9 that replaces the rotary dial and the conventional buttons and controls of the previous model with two large, high-resolution touch displays. While haptic and acoustic feedbacks help users hear and feel a click as confirmation when their finger triggers a function, the lack of knobs makes the system less intuitive and a little distracting.
Starting price for the 2019 A7 is $68,975 and $69,975 in
2020. The as-tested pricing came to $85,240.
Sí: The A7’s distinctive sportback design adds luxury and versatility.
No: The MMI touch response system9 was clunky to operate and there was very little storage capacity in the center console.

Kia, ReviewsComments Off on Electric Vehicle Review: 2019 Kia Niro EV
Nov252019
Not satisfied with reversing nearly every clean air and water regulation enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since its inception in 1970, the federal government has decided to take on California’s clean air laws. Despite these efforts, new and improved electric vehicles (EVs) will keep rolling off production lines, due in large part to California’s successful emissions standards.
Initially, EVs did present certain challenges. With minimal electric ranges, the first EV models helped coin a new phrase, “range anxiety.” Tesla reversed that with ranges of 300-plus miles and other manufactures followed suit. Latino Traffic Report (LTR) recently tested the 2019 Kia Niro EV EX Premium and its range of 200-plus miles will set minds at ease.
Kia first introduced the gasoline-electric hybrid version of
the Niro in 2017. It was followed by the Niro PHEV plug-in hybrid in 2018 and in
2019, the Niro EV completed the lineup.
Knowing that this vehicle uses no gasoline is a thrill, but
that it does it without immediately losing power or range elevates the
experience. Powered by a 201-horsepower electric motor with 291
lb.–ft. of torque, lithium ion polymer battery and assisted by an onboard
charger and adjustable regenerative braking via paddle shifters, the Niro EV
has an estimated electric range of 239 miles.
When testing other EVs, LTR has seen the starting range quickly evaporate once the throttle or any other function like air conditioning was engaged, but not on the Niro. After charging overnight on a 120-volt plug in the garage, the range read 263–285 miles and dissipated at a normal rate, much more like gasoline, even with the air conditioning running. Of the four drive modes that come standard, Normal, Sport, Eco + and Eco, most of the test drive was conducted in the latter.
On the outside, it stands out from its
siblings with a unique front fascia with a closed off grille for improved
aerodynamics. It stands out among EVs with a Combined Charging System (CCS) DC
fast-charge plug located in the front of the vehicle.
Early electric vehicles were small and light to help extend
the range but the Niro brings the convenience of a crossover utility vehicle
with seating for five and a rear seat that folds flat to expose 53 cubic feet
of cargo room.
It’s also loaded with standard features, like a blind spot
monitor, that help justify its starting price. Technology like Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto, smart cruise control, forward collision warning, rear cross
traffic alert (essential in any parking lot and assisted by a whirring sound so
that it can be heard by pedestrians), a smart key with push-button start, and AM/FM/MP3/SiriusXM
audio system are all standard.
As the premium trim, the test model also included more exclusive features like a power sunroof, heated and ventilated leather front seats, Harmon Kardon premium audio, navigation with an eight-inch touchscreen, and a rear parking sensor.
Pricing for the Niro EV starts at $39,545. The as-tested
pricing came to $47,155.
Sí: The Niro EV beckons to the open road with an impressive range and with a quick charger that extends electric power.
No: Already a bit pricey, not sure the added features for the Premium trim warrant more than $10,000 extra from the base.
