Latino Traffic Report (LTR) claims an affiliation on two automotive journalist organizations, the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA), as a member, and the Hispanic Motor Press Awards (HMPA), as a juror. Both organizations announced 2020 award winners last fall and LTR predicts that some of these models will continue to receive accolades throughout the year.

In October, TAWA held its twenty-sixth annual Truck Rodeo, an event that offers its members the chance to test drive trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV) on- and off-road for two days, culminating in a vote for the winners in individual categories as well as the overall Truck and SUV of Texas—there was a Crossover Utility Vehicle category in the past but it was dropped this year.

Nineteen categories were represented but not all included competitors, i.e. Full-Size Pickup Truck of Texas, plus the overall prizes of Truck and SUV of Texas awards, won by the 2020 Ram 1500 and the all-new 2020 Kia Telluride, respectively. Nissan Leaf.

The HMPA, through the Hispanic Motor Press Foundation (HMPF), celebrated its tenth annual awards presentation, announcing the winners at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. These awards are the only ones that recognize automotive value and appeal in the Latino market.

“With Hispanic buyers accounting for 25 percent of the growth in new-vehicle sales, HMPA helps by preselecting choices for the consumer,” states Ricardo Rodriguez-Long, founder and president of the HMPF. The non-profit organization spearheads the awards and helps educate Latinos on cleaner mobility through year-round grassroots efforts and events.

Ford Escape Hybrid.

A jury of 27 Latino auto journalists assessed vehicles from twelve categories based on test drives and specific criteria, e.g. fuel economy, in order to come up with the winners. Green car winners included the Nissan Leaf in the Electric Car category and the Ford Escape Hybrid in the Hybrid category. The awards also reflected a winning trend for the Ram 1500 and Kia Telluride, taking top honors in the Pickup Truck and Sports Utility categories, respectively, that will probably continue through the next year—the Ram Heavy Duty and Telluride were recently announced as finalists for the North American Truck and Utility Vehicles of the Year.
